What to do in case of fire at work?
The outbreak of a fire is every company's nightmare, unfortunately an accident can happen to anyone. But do your employees know what to do in the event of a fire? That, of course, is where it starts. It is important that your premises meet safety requirements and have an evacuation plan, so that everyone can act safely if a fire actually breaks out.
Be well prepared
Fire prevention starts with good preparation. First of all, there are several safety requirements that every business premises must meet. For instance, sufficient fire alarms and extinguishers must be available, various escape routes must be clearly marked and smoke detectors must obviously work properly. It is also necessary to brief all staff on the correct approach in the event of a fire.
The fire alarm
What to do in the event of a fire at work? The very first step is to raise the alarm. It is vital that everyone knows about the fire in time and can leave the premises. A fire alarm system (which most large buildings and commercial premises have) can come in handy for this. Pressing the black dot or smashing a glass plate immediately triggers a notification in the fire brigade's control room.
Extinguishing the fire
If it is a small fire whose cause is known, the fire can be extinguished by itself. Is this not the case? Then skip this step. Note: Even in the case of a small fire, the alarm should be raised first. Once everyone is aware of the fire, you can then extinguish the fire. There are different extinguishers for different situations. In preparation, it is therefore important to consider what type of extinguishing agent to hang in the room. A restaurant kitchen, for instance, will have a different extinguishing agent than an office building.
Safety = evacuation plan + extinguishing agents + training
Evacuating the premises
A safe organisation needs a well-trained in-house emergency response team. Among other things, in-house emergency response workers ensure that the evacuation of the building proceeds quickly and smoothly. They can also provide first aid and help fight fires. Offering your staff health and safety training is therefore anything but a luxury. As for evacuation, everyone should also be aware of what to do in the event of a fire. Every room should have a floor plan showing the nearest escape routes.
